Tai Chi Chu'an

Tai Chi

Tai Chi Chu'an is translated as "supreme ultimate fist" and is classified as an "internal" martial art style.  Its origins are obscured in the mists of time, but it is generally believed that some form of Tai Chi has been performed for the past several thousand years.

While Tai Chi is a potent martial art when applied by a master it is generally connected with a calmness of mind and body which is brought about through a series of uninterrupted flowing movements.

The practice of Tai Chi involves learning a set of pre-arranged movements and performing these movements slowly so that over time the practitioner generates a sense of body awareness.

These movements are purposefully designed to help cultivate the 'chi'  (universal energy) in the body and to help meld it harmoniously with that of all natural things. By performing the movements slowly and with continuous transitions from one posture to the next the student will also develop better balance, body alignment and strength.

The Red Lotus School offers instruction in Middle Length Yang Style form which descends from Grand Master Cheng Man Ch'ing.  The form in its entirety is comprised of about 80 movements and takes about 20 minutes to perform.  Red Lotus offers beginning classes which teach the basics of Tai Chi and introduce the student to the form as well as advanced classes in Tai Chi including Tai Chi's meditative aspects, Tai Chi sword and push hands.

Red Lotus School offers 15-week sessions of beginning and intermediate classes in Tai Chi. These sessions begin in autumn, winter and spring. Please see our home page and schedule page for details. Advanced Tai Chi is taught during on-going classes.
